Note on your QB pro 99. What is better? I am using QB 6.0 and have not liked it. Not a true networked version. Slower than 5.0. Is QB 6.0 faster? Do the reports come up faster? A?R aging takes forever in 6.0. Thanks for any help.

Either thru upgrades in my computer or in the program, i don't know, but my reports in qb99 are much faster than older versions. I transport my files back and forth from home to work site for a portable computer via zip drives and even with their slow access time, my reports generation time is acceptable. My company file is 10 megs.
I think that the JLC cd is great and worth the info to you IF you are the type to use this forum. I use the old version to supply articles for our local home builders association meetings and newsletter.

we use qbooks pro and i am very happy with it.i have a gateway g6 450 and a pentium 260. on the estimater, well i don't think it will work all the time especially on big commercial jobs as they have there costs set and you either fit there budjet or they will find someone who will.it is very helpful on getting you on the right track. i just downloaded a 30 free trial from the net.try it before you buy it.
dale ps can someone tell me what software i can use to connect to my computer at the office and do whatever i need to do and then transfer it to home computer? thanks

Dale -
Do you want to transport data files back and forth on a disk or do you want to connect the computers together and use one to work on the other? If you want to just transport data files on a disk, but have them updated with the latest changes, try using the Briefcase function built into Win95 and Win98. The files you are moving between computers are automatically updated for you. E-mail me if you need more info.
*Hey y'all using Quickbooks, there's actually a discussion group just like this one where all your questions can be answered... go to http://www.helptalk.com/qbpro/index.html I've been using QB Pro for years now, and I've got a decent little CSI code-based estimating setup going here that, in my humble opinion, beats all those other estimating programs hands down and also integrates with my accounting. I might be able to send you the items list file that I use, as a good starting point, and you could edit it for your own prices as you use it....
*ross,I'd be interested in taking a look at you estimating setup. Any info would be appreciated.thanks,Tom

Ross: I would also like to take a look at your setup. I have used QBPro for my accounting for 3 years now, but have not got into the estimating part of it.
*Ross; I too would like to see how you have your items file entered in. I do not have mine organized as well as I would like. Please help! JOHN
*Hey Ross,Thanks for the qb site! I'll trade ya my stick method excel spreadsheet estimator for a copy of yours. email [email protected]

Just got a mailer for the Craftsman book cd estimator for residential construction. Any one have any comments on it before I buy. I am familiar with there products and find them to be a good backup for oddball jobs.
Also, I am thinking of buying JLC's cd of back issues. Is it worth the c-note?
Just upgraded to Quickbooks Pro 99, a substantial improvement over qb 6.0 I think.

Tommy,
I have the craftsman books CD Estimator. It is ok but I use it mainly as a backup to my old-fashioned paper and pencil take-offs. Some items klisted throughout are a little unclear as to what is and is not included with that particular item but overall it was indeed a good investment. I have all the cd's for estimating through them. The paint estimating program, for instance, puts me right on the money..never too high or low. As for the other stuff, when combined with your own experience can be a real asset. The only thing I dislike is that everything is broken down into far too many seperate catagories. For example, Vinyl siding doesn't give you a standard per square price but instead breaks it down into sf of siding, lf of j-channel, lf of corner posts etc... And it also seems that they have left out some of the most basic items like decks for instance. They do'nt go through many options there at all.
You can download a 30 day free trial version from their website which I think is still at:

Best luck,
