We just installed a pine floor in a house
to match an existing floor. A friend said to use gymseal as the finish. They also found that the first layer should to thinned. Just got your March 2000 issue and read Chris R. saying the same thing…could anyone help.

That's the way, uh huh we like it uh huh.
Just a light sanding between coats does wonders. Don't skip this step. Then, tack it with mineral spirits (because you're using oil based finish) on a soft rag. Use a lamb's wool applicator for the finish.

Regarding the finish on a wood floor, I recently put down a brand new red oak floor and finished it off with a commercial water based finished called Street Shoe . It is made by Basic Coatings for commercial applications such as ball rooms, restaurants, gymnasium floors etc. Their literature states that if installed in residential applications it is practically indestructible. We have a very active dog and so far no scratch marks whatsoever. I also really love the way it brought out the wood grain. We used the satin finish, love it. The stuff is not cheap, about $80 / gal but you get a good coverage, about 600 to 800 s.f. per gallon. Use a coat of Basic Coating sealer first.
