A customer wants to use solid surface countertop with moulded sink in her kitchen remodel. The subject of solid suface veneers came up.
Anyone out there have experience with them? I spoke with a dealer a few years ago when they were just coming in. He said they gave the same look, similar performance, at a reduced price. Sounded good, but the customer I was working with at the time decided on tile countertops and I haven’t looked into veneers since.
I’m wondering, now that they’ve been around a while, anyone have any anecdotal opinions? – Thanks

I "think" that I read that they did not work out.
BTW, there is a company out now doing overlays with the composite quarts material. this ove exisitng counter tops. The name is Granite Transformations.
I saw it on one job and would not have realized until I looked at the bottom of the counter island overhang.
I think it's Wilsonart has a venner product that is already bonded to a substrate, that is supposed to be good. Another fabricator I know uses it when veneer is called for. I always stayed clear of veneer when I was fabricating.....was told several times it requires differetn tools and techniques than the 1/2" material. Now, it's been five years or so since I was doing much fabrication, and things may have changed....I know that other, thinner materials have been introduced too....some is only as thick as plastic laminate.
You could try the solid surface fabricators association (ISSFA.org) ....they have a bulletin board, or Solid Surface magazine (solidsurfacemagazine.com).
Jim, Adrian mentions Wilsonart. I am remembering serious failures (tho the one I had done is fine) and the resulting discontinuing by Wilsonart of their Laminated to PB solid surface material. This is the product they developed to make counters out of when not using full thickness solid surface. I think the others that offered veneered SS are done with it too.
Take a peek at their websites or give a distributor a call. I believe they are still selling the thin SS, but not advising anyone laminate it.
A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

FWIW, the counter top place that I used to use back in Iowa told me that they wouldn't use the stuff. Said that it was a warranty nightmare.
Down here everybody just uses granite........its cheap.
