I’d like to have our entry door replaced and have read through the threads looking for advice on a top quality, solid wood door with side panels. The manufacturers referenced most were Peachtree, Pella, Stanley, Therma-Tru, Marvin, and Andersen.
Any strong opinions on which ones I should or shouldn’t consider? A standard 36″ door width . . .
Thanks,

The only factory-made solid wood door I would consider is a Simpson.
Their website will tell you all about their doors, and show you the available sizes and styles.
There are many brands. Just be aware that any exterior wood door with any clear finish (not painted or solid stained) will need refinishing in a few years. The harsher the climate, the sooner.
We see many HOs who are totally unaware of how soon they have to be refinished and how expensive it is. Particularly doors with polyurethane and intricate details.

Appreciate the feedback. Our entry door is under an overhang and doesn't get too much direct sun exposure and never gets wet. I appreciate the reminder of maintenance with a wood door. But the asthetics outway the extra work for us . . . I checked out the Simpson - Very nice! Great assortment. Also checked out another manufacturer called Morgan which also looks encouraging.

I am still recommending Simpson above all others.
Forget the Morgan. You might consider Rogue Valley, but there is nothing in their line that Simpson doesn't have.
I was an insider in the door manufacturing biz. I know the products, I know the people, I have been in their plants, and done business with their distributors.
Thanks Stinger. I've spent a couple of hours reviewing the Simpson site. I am very impressed with the selection, and there are a few dealers near where I live which makes it easy for me to go check them out. If their construction is half as good as how they organized the website, I'll be sold.
Thanks for your feedback and endorsement. Greatly appreciated.

has anybody had any experience with solid core doors filled with compressed salt. No warpage whatsover at any time of the year.
Years ago they sold them here in Vancouver, BC. Discontinued due to high cost.
We also have used solid core doors and veneered laminate on them both sides. You can do some fantastic designs with that.
If you plan to stay in the house for a while, I would say that fiberglass is a much better option. You will be amazed at how good they look. FHB had a great article on this subject in the last 18 months.

Glad I save all my FHB's. I'll pull it out and check out the fiberglass.
Thanks!
