While driving through Cambridge last week, I saw these wacky houses which made me stop the truck. I’m not computer savy enough to post pics, so I was glad to see the Boston Sunday Globe Magazine featured them today. You can see them on the archy’s website @ www.uni-a.com

I'm not computer savy enough to post pics,
yes you are. If I can do it anybody can.
I mean even Frenchy learned how after how many years.
is it Saturday yet?
the jury is still out on whether frenchy learnt or not..
so far he has 5 pictures in 27 different threads...I don't feel safe in this world no more I don't want to die in a nuclear war I want to sail away to a distant shore and make like an ape man
can't make up my mind.. wait for spring.. or wait for frenchy to post his next pic
i'm betting on springMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Help hold his feet to the fire. I don't care if he posts ten pictures of dirty snow for practice, just so he gets it beat into him!'sides, it'll keep him busy so he isn't posting more of his kookie ideas about moisture. That house is the real thing!

Mike,
I'm trying buddy , I'm honestly trying.. Ya gotta give me credit I smoked one computer trying to post them but I bought a new one and so far can't figure out how to drive it well enough to shrink pictures down to size and post them here.. I assume you don't want any 900 byte photo's
Frenchy, if you can get them on here regardless of size we'll shrink them down for you.
Once you click your way thru the foriegn roadmap a few times you'll have it down to a science.
It's the first couple drives around the block that make it rough.

Mister T
Well I admit defeat!
I tried to post some pictures of the black walnut floor I put in my billard room and the bridge to it but all that happened is first I smoked my old computer..
Then when I bought a new computer and tried again I cannot make the pictures appear no matter what I do..
Actaully the problem isn't with this web site, I've figured that out. (thanks Stuart again!) I can't figure out how to drive the new computer..
Hang in there and maybe it will happen.. (I hope!)
You're such an optimist. If you and frenchy can do it, maybe I can learn to resize a picture.

Not my cup of tea but I give them props for pushing the envelope.
BTW if you had typed in www. then we could just click the link ie:

Not sure what environment these things fit in to?
If there is an environment for them it would be Cambridge I guess- with Harvard and MIT down the street, there's plenty of thinking going on over there!

Well, that website deserves an award! For the slowest loading website on the planet since the invention of the abacus...maybe frenchy will post another picture before that site gets downloaded to my PC.

That group has a nice write up in this months Dwell Magazine. I personally would not want the call backs on any of them. But I'm sure they'll do well in Cambridge.
Ohhhhhhh...another NZ'er I see. Well your country won't let me in so I'm mad at them and you all won't get my tipi over there now...imagine a country that wouldn't welcome ME...of all people.
Looks like I may just have to find another corner of the world to fit my booty into and I have my eye on somewhere special I think : )~
You can come visit though : )

Got to give those civil service bods something to do and give them the opportunity to boss someone around.
I was on a cpl of good NZ immegrant sites or whatever the phrase they have for people wanting to come in...I forget. Seems thats a big issue over there that alot of the people don't like, Keeping me out...lol.
Everyone seems to be trying to get rid of me...wondering when Katrina will get wise...lol. Seems they don't want people retiring over there. If you have a million dollars in their banks you can stay they said...really. It just wasn't worth all the hassle they make you go through after really looking at it for a few months. Too bad...no biggie...one thing leads to another so....

thanks- I'll give that a shot http://www.uni-a.com hey it just worked! I'll go back and edit. Thanks for the education!
I'd call those stylish moreso than 'wacky'.
We live in a circa 1929 house right now. We're looking at upgrading school districts so are looking in the first ring burbs.
It's painfully clear to me now that American residential architecture went down the crapper right around 1950. Lots and lots of the blandest of bland ranches. Frustrating.
It's nice to see a development like this. Personality goes a long way in a house.
I was up in PA a couple of weeks ago, and saw this...it's all one house... "But to be honest some folks here have been pushing the envelope quite a bit with their unnecessary use if swear words. They just put a character in to replace a letter. But everyone knows what they're saying." Sancho
Snort- Definetly cool! I'm worse looking at that stuff when I'm driving than most people with a cellphone- I would have wound up off the road looking at that- that is definetly a cool house
I've got to get some night shots, it's very interesting Outside of the gates the trucks were unloadin',
The weather was hot, a-nearly 90 degrees.
The man standin' next to me, his head was exploding,
Well, I was prayin' the pieces wouldn't fall on me.
I don't know about you- but if I see something like this I'll ring the bell. It's really common for people to want to show their house off.
I'm returning a call to a guy tonight who I met when I stopped and payed a compliment to. This guy's barn is unbelievable- standing seam copper, galvanized siding that stone masons covered after with dry laid walls- it's awesome. Anyway I gave him a card because I didn't want them to wonder what stranger was looking at his house- now it's done and he wants me to consider looking at other projects on this house.
I'd love to see what that house you saw looks like inside- I hope you can post some more pics.

it looks like they're done on the cheap but i give the designers high marks for trying something interesting.
I stopped to look at them because they got me interested. I'm not sure how interested you'd stay once you were inside though- that's alot of walls to be staring at- I think you'd wind up prety stir-crazy. I did like the corner skylight detail where the boxes were twisted away from each other though- a great light/ privacy trick.
I do like the term wacky for this though. It's in an area just blocks from a giant federal housing project yet not far from Harvard and MIT- a neighborhood where people either have never been to school or have never left school. This little project winds up looking like like an intellectuals attempt to blend in with the poor- a rusty little shack and a stack of boxes that are left a cardboard color- ironic that it winds up being such a standout.
What happened to building a "good looking home". Those are some sad looking buildings!!!
Martin
Exactly- talk about how do you help bring down the neighborhood. Especially when about 1/2 the houses in the area have undergone serious rehabs.
To be fair "good looking" is in the eye of the beholder.
