Hello Everybody
Ok, normally I am inside trimming houses and installing kitchens. But the homebuilder that I sub for here in the Poconos cannot get any body to do his decks, so he reaches for his sucker (me) sure no problem, gave me 7 decks, Got a buddy with a backhoe so I dug the sonotubes with no problems on monday,
Question: what is the lowest temperature that I can pour 10″ sonotubes @ 48″?
Been real cold here this past week and is not expected to pop above 25 for the next week, the the sonotubes are buried aprox 42″ with 6″ above grade.
Thank you
Mark

hi
you should put anti hydro in the concrete ask a concrete supplier also they will confirm it
what bulider in the poconos are you working for and are you looking for any other work ?
Hi Crosscutter
Yeah I know that I can put calcium chloride in with the bag mix, but the local concrete co.(Koller) is not even mixing so if they dont mix, neither will I.
Allways looking for work as I do not like to put all my eggs in 1 basket.
The builder is located here in Pocono Summit

hand mixing or ready mix?
I would have them use hot water and 1% calcium and cover with foam or curing blankets or break open some hay bales - whatever you can do to make sure that it will stay above freezing in the tube for 12-124 hours while it kicks
More important - you want to be sure the bottom bearing soil is not frozen when you pour. If it is, the frost will have lifted it and destabilized it, so that the piers will settle when if finally thaws.
That might mean you are going to be investing in a bunch of heat l;amp bulbs to dangle in the holes with covers on the night before.

Really good point Piffin. Easy to forget that too. Thanks for the reminder.

Check this out too - unless you already have the tubes set in place - I can buy precast pyramidal piers that can be set into a hole on packed stone base. With a backhoe, two of us can set a dozen or so in a day pretty easy

NYC, depending on the situation or design, you can often leave the sonotubes out while you build the deck. Just use some temporary 2x4's as posts. When the weather warms up a bit, pour your tubes. Another advantage of this method is that it makes it easier to place your tubes perfectly. A pet peeve of mine is off-center sonotubes.
all good points above. Wait till after Sunday or Monday .....BIG snowstorm coming
A good friend will come and bail you out of jail...BUT, a true friend will be sitting next to you saying "Damn...that was fun"!
