sound absorbing loose fill insulation?
Anyone heard of or seen or used a granular type loose fill insulation that is supposed to be really good at absorbing sound? Sorry – I don’t have any more info. Just a vague discription from a RE agent. He said he saw it used in some tract housing in Las Vagas that backed right up to a highway.

Matt,
I wouldn't call it granular, but cellulose loose fill insulation is very good at absorbing sound. When I switched my attic from fiberglass to cellulose the difference in traffic noise getting inside was astounding.

VERMICULITE at a masonry supply. I used to bore 1" holes into the tops, bottoms and lock and hinge mounts (mortises) With a steel rod, through the holes, break out the usually cardboard inside grid work.
Using a funnel, pour the stuff in and bounce the door to settle the material down.
Add as much as you can get in, then plug the holes with corks. Turn the door around and fill from the bottom ,plug ,then the sides etc. etc.
When you knock on the (Now quite heavier) door, it won't sound hollow any more. Acoustic tiles added to the outers will deaden the sound even more Steinmetz.
It would be a lot easier to buy a solid core door.
