I need to insulate the ceiling and walls to limit the sound coming out of my home theater. The ceiling has 10″ joists, and the walls are 2×4 studs.
I plan on having a dropped ceiling so that I can access the electrical and pluming mechanics as needed.
Would fiberglass batts be more efficient, or do I use rigid foam, or blown in celulose. The material cost is not important.
Thanks in advance.

with the home theatre system pounding i think you should look to doing it right which means checking out insulation suppliers for their diagrams and advice on the ways to divorce your theatre envelop from the surrounding areas. i've built sound studios for a radio station, and what was done there i would suspect would be overkill for you, but the main pt. in that or any sound proofing is to separate the direct transfer of sound waves, by cushioning or by completely isolating the room. add to that, insulating each envelope. your drop ceiling will have accoustical tile but the grid will pick up the sound waves and send the vibrations through the wires to the joists. the whole drop too could act like a speaker and amplify the noise to the bottom of floor above.
you can also split the door jamb and add another door swinging the opp. way. with cushioning strips between the jambs. add to these things the need for soft interior finishes that will capture the sound after it has passed your ears. cloth or sound dampening fabric on the walls, floor and maybe panels up high at the ceiling.
of course, you could just get a pair of headphones. best of luck to ya. reminds me of the time someone wanted me to give his basement driving range a try at soundproofing.
