I’m looking at sound insulating a basement ceiling. I’m hanging dry wall and will probably run fiberglass bats between the floor joist. My biggest concern is the sound that is tansfered thru the floor joists. I was thinking of using a layer of Built Rite under the drywall. Any ideas or solutions. I don’t want to break the bank and can’t give up much height since the ceiling is at 7′ 6″ now.

Resilient channel. It is a rollformed steel lineal that comes in 10 foot lengths, screws to your joists at 90 degrees to joist runs, spaced 16 on center. Drywall then screws to the RC, not to the joists.
It is meant exactly for that . . . to isolate the joists from the gypboard, and help reduce sound transmittance.
Read about it and see specs at the Dietrich Industries website.
Thanks Gene,
Looks like a good product. I found some of the double legged channel at my local builder supply. It comes in a 12' lengths and are $4.85 a piece. Seems a little pricey.
It's 25 guage and aprox. 1" tall. Looks like it's rigid enough to work well for leveling against the floor joist before installing the DW, the price might be worth it.
I couldn't get a contact with the web-site. Wondering what pricing I might get thu Dietrich directly. I need about 50.

Where I used to live, there were supply houses that sold only gypboard and like products, and they all sold RC-1 resilient channel.
Where I am now, it is not as large a market, so the lumberyards are doing the gypboard sales, but even these lumberyards are stocking and selling RC-1.
That's what you want. RC-1. Sort of a U-shape in profile, 25 gage, the leg that is longer than the other is the one you attach to the studs or joists. It is a net add of 1/2 to 5/8 inch thickness.
Call around. You'll find RC-1.
