Folks,
I have been looking at ideas for some passive solar features I want to build into a traditional “Georgian” house. Alot of the window covers you are supposed to cover the windows with at night, however, do not fit with that look.
While in Europe recently I saw some shutters that really look like they would work. They are made of solid 3/4 wood with raised panels. They are inside the window, not outside of it. They are hinged in such a way that they fold into the frame the window glass is framed in. That is the window frame is probably 6/4- 8/4 and the shutters are hinged into a dado cut into the frame.
While a solid wood panel is not alot of insulation, it must double the R value of the glass and it would keep the room air from cooling the room air and setting up a “siphon efect”. It is great also if you get a hurricaine or you want to darken a room. Also an additional security measure. The ones I saw were some sort of yellow pine and quite handsome.
I have never seen these in this country. Does anyone know a source?

Hi Frank,
There's at least a dozen guys on this board that can build these shutters for you. Just post the specs. and let the boys make offers to you.

*You might want to try Kestrel shutters. They do stock and custom sizes, interior and exterior. They are also available as fully assembled or DIY kits. They will also design & build custom from your drawings. Seems like they might be able to handle your thing.N.B. - I am neither associated with this company in any way, nor will I benefit by mentioning them or by your potential business. I just happened to see them at a show a while back, and have liked them - high quality standards, etc., but I have not used them either, so 'caveat emptor'.
