I have a second story gable to reach for sheathing, staining and painting soffets, etc. I’d like to purchase a small amount, like
three levels, of new or used steel schafolding as I have other long term uses as well. Any idea where I might look for something like this? I’m located in the San Francisco Bay area.

try the local rental places.
the ones around here sell their stuff every so often
You might go to

(the distances are from my house in El Sobrante)
or if that doesn't work, go to http://www.yahoo.com to the yellow pages listing and type in "scaffolding".
(There was a place in Martinez along Pine Ave. (near the Yard Birds) that I always intended to go and get some more scaffolding, but last time I checked it wasn't there any more, so that doesn't help you any... It probably was the Interstate Scaffolding place and they give another listing in Richmond in the Yahoo yellow pages.)

Toolcrib/Amazon has it, but you'd probably pay an arm and a leg for shipping.
I've had great luck buying all sorts of things by placing WANTED adds in little shopper type newspapers.
When you go to buy from a store, they have all the power because you are just one of many buyers they can sell to. When someone calls on your wanted add, you are the only buyer and are often buying from someone who doesn't care enough about the $ to even try to sell the item in question.
You're unique! Just like everyone else! Scott Adams
When I was in the Bay Area I bought a batch of used scaffolding from Sunbelt Rentals, which is out in the Concord/Clayton area. Called them in the morning and they had it to the job in the afternoon. I don't think they sell the planks used for liabiity reasons, so I got some at Truitt & White in Berkeley.
My local Home depot rents the 15 ft 3-level on casters for $64/wk. It is the type that Amazon/tool crib sells, and would cost well over $1000. So far I have rented it twice for gutter repair and other maintenance. It all fits in the back of a small toyota pickup. A month rental is 3X weekly rate. Best part is you don't need to store it.

if the link doesn't work, got to craigslist.org (bay area) and type in scaffolding in the 'general for sale'
hope that helps..
Oak,
Just wanted to thank you for the tip to search Crags List for used scaffolding. I found a guy in the East Bay. Got enough 36"x10'8 to span 50 feet, single level or build any height. Also got all my cross braces, safety rails, feet, etc. Whole package was $500 and like new. Couldn't be happier.
Really like Breaktime. Again, thanks.
