Spar Varnish & Urethane & Poly-Finish
I have two questions.
1.)I have a door with two coats of gloss Spar Varnish on it. Owner wants less shine. I have a can of Spar Urethane satin on hand. Can I put the urethane on top of the varnish to cut the shine?
2.)I put three coats of Ace (water base) Poly-Finish satin on an interior bow window ledge. Owner was thrilled with the look after the first two coats. But after the third coat she thinks it has too much shine (yes, I believe I stirred….). She can live with it as is, but she would prefer less shine. When I look on line I don’t see a less shiny version of the Ace Poly-Finish. Is there a matte or eggshell finish I can put on top of the Poly-Finish.
Thanks.

Try going over both of them with some fine steel wool or the equivalent in scotch bright pads.

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
The satin finish overcoat for the door will reduce the gloss to a point, but not to a satin finish. You should sand as much of the gloss off as possible, but spar varnish doesn't sand really well.
The window ledge gloss can be reduced by sanding with 240/320/400 and polishing out with automotive rubbing pads to eliminate the scratches. Poly does sand reasonably well so this is likely to work better than the door.
Just curious...aren't varnish & poly pretty much the same thing these days?
Spar varnish is a 'long oil' varnish meant for weather and UV resistance. It doesn't harden up the same way as poly so doesn't respond well efforts to refine the finish.Other than that, I think you're right. I haven't seen a can of alkyd varnish for years.
