Ladies and Gentlemen,
Here’s the scoop.
Favoutite sister & BIL are ready to do their deck. The project will be built within the family so to speak so labour $ ( She is an amazing cook ! )and equipment ( I have lots ! ) are not an issue.
House is modern 60’s – 70’s style designed by an archy for himself ( Open style 2 level ranch ? ) built in an older subdivision with back slightly cantilevered over a 60′ deep and very steep (18/12) wooded ravine(Very private) located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The access from the house will be through the western exposure wall ( Doorsill @ grade + 2′ +/- ) . The deck could wrap around the south exposure wall which is the ravine IE: deck would transition from railings to no railings.
What I am looking for is feedback on materials, design, links and generally cool deck features. Sis started the conversation with cedar decking which will be very $ here in the GWN and my first reaction was a Trexlike material approach. Yes I am searching the archives !
Any thoughts will be appreciated !!!
P.S. Prodeck ? I can’t find any of your deck photos !

hire an architect it'll be the best $500.00 you spend on the deck.
Geo,
I is a bit confused

If you were arrested for being a quality builder would there be enough evidence to convict you?
Please explain your post.On An Island By The SEA
Novy- The thing I would be concerned with is the steep ravine. You will have to get a permit for anything 30" off the ground here. The building dept. will advise you as to proper footings for the ravine. You may have to dig to China and fill sono tubes with a truckload of concrete before you nail your first board.
Goldhiller was kind enough to give you my website http://www.pro-dek.com but there are ALOT of other great sites on the web to find Ideas.
For example here is a site with some great looking railings.

If you're gonna have to dig all the way to China, I'm thinking it might be more adventurous to start in China and dig back this way, and see how close you come to getting the peirs where you want them. Just a Vicadin induced thought.
Hope this helps.
Come on now Jim, Novy is only doin this job for a sandwich......:-)Bob

Dude! Vicodin? Did you post about hurting yourself and I missed it?
I always save my extras when I go to the dentist. Got me through a bad cold one time when I thought I was going to die of a sore throat.
Get well soon.
Legs,
Thanks for the insight re: China. Isn't that funny how holes drilled from the other side never show up in the right spot !On An Island By The SEA
Pilot hole NOVY- got's to drill the pilot hole first. I'm thinkin one of those high powered lasers ought to do the job. :-)Bob

Bob,
Thanks for the reply !
I realize the bad on the ravine but from a design perspective it could be very spectacular ! The ravine is a very beautifull place !
Re: digging to China I think that the ravine is actually more of an escarpment and stone (Slate) will be very close to the surface. Epoxy anchors and steel footings. P Eng Stamp should not be a problem.

Al- I Like the site but I'm not going to pay them $100. per year to post pictures of my work. I'm a little confused as to why anyone would. I think they should pay YOU for your Ideas instead of them profiting to display your hard work.
Thanks for the Link though.Bob

Bob-
I'm with you on the $100 but for guys that don't have a deep portfolio of completed work, it could be a good sales / design tool. I really like being able to link to the companies on there that posted their sites. BTW, I think the site is connected to the Deck Industry Association (http://www.Deckindustry.org), which seems to be a pretty decent group starting up. I've been getting their Professional Deck Builder magazine for almost a year & it's had some interesting info in it. Hey, maybe Taunton could start Fine Deckbuilding! Nothing like a little competition!
