when laying cement block(one side split face) what do you use as a reference. Do you use the smooth side and lay to the line or ? And what
about 4 sided split face pillaster block I can put a level on top but how
do I keep it from wandering side to side. Dazed and confused in Long Beach.

On a wall I work the inside corner for plumb reference, and use line strechers after the corners are complete. Watch the mortar from setting up on the "split-face" side, Since you can't scrape the "split-face" with your trowel, as you normally would a c.m.u., its easy to keep laying and forget. Pain in the rear to clean dried mortar on the "split" side.
On columns I again work the inside for maybe four courses and then I'm usually all-set for the remainder. Hope this helps good luck! Jon J.
