I have a small problem I’m hoping someone can help me with. We are pulling
cable through a multistory building. The vertical back bone consists of 4
inch conduit running between telephone rooms from floor to floor. The
conduits are filled with a black spongy looking firestopping which we had to
pull out in order to pull the new cables through.
The trouble is now I have to replace the firestopping and I don’t know where
to get this type. The only type I’ve seen is the caulking type, mineral
wool and the little sanbag looking kind. Any idea who makes the spray in
expanding sponge type?
(Caulking won’t work beacause it won’t build up enough to fill up the large opening without running down)

We had a similar situation filling around plumbing pipes from floor to floor and the building engineer was convinced he had heard about an expanding foam firestop, but all inquiries pointed us to stuffing a backing and using fire-caulk. (We ended up using cement around the pipes). Aren't your conduits joined in a pull box in closets? That eliminates the problem of open conduits. The other problem that I see with expanding material is that if you decide to pull more wire later it will have expanded to fill the conduit and, presumably, adhered to all of the components involved.
The only non-urethane foam I know of is the Dap latex foam caulk, but it doesn't have a fire rating.
Good luck. And, if you are aware of it, is there a plenum-rated Coax on the market? We've found lots of telco, cat5, and such wire, but we end up running our coax in conduit.

question: If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done?

Ben:
Try CSC (Communications Supply Corp) for the Plenum Coax. They have a cabling System Catalog the size of a phone book. In CA - 1-800-300-9878.
*Ben: unless I misunderstand your Q, plenum coax is available everywhere, even HD -- it's the blue-jacketed stuff. The electrical supply I use has it in RG6, and the cheaper RG59 is available too. It is several times the price of the regular stuff, so multiple runs in conduit would probably cost less.
