Src for quality hearing protection

emaxxman00 | Posted in General Discussion on November 2, 2009 05:41am

Hi all,

The pair of ear protection muffs that I got from Home Depot broke. They were industrial rated and worked pretty well. Unfortunately, the plastic “headband” on it broke. HD and Lowes only carry a cheap version now.

Does anyone have an online source (or one in the Warren county area of NJ) for a quality set of ear muffs. I would be willing to pay more for a pair that was made with metal parts vs plastic.

Thanks in advance.

Well, dunno anything about them, but they're made by Smith & Wesson:

I would expect that some of the other premium catalog sites would have stuff as well.

(And shooting catalogs would be another place to look -- or a local sporting goods store.)

Your local safety supply should have an assortment of various types of hearing protectors. I have found the disposable ear plugs to give as good of hearing protection as most of the muffs I have tried (I have about half a dozen pairs of various muffs). For a couple of tasks, I have used both the earplugs and muffs, however. If you don't have a local safety supply that you like, I have had good luck with Sanderson Safety Supply in Portland, Oregon, although always in store. Their website is:

Of the muffs, I found the Peltor to be the lightest and most comfortable as well as giving the best seal.

Check the sound level ratings of whatever you buy. Some of the muffs are not rated all that high and some of the plugs are rated several DB higher than some muffs.

I bought some Stihl brand hearing protectors at the local Stihl deal, and am really happy with them.

The best ear protection is always what you have with you. Muffs are bulky, hot and inconvenient. I put these on every morning right after my shirt, 7 days a week. They are always there when I need them, not on the other side of the house. They are cheap, cool and work as well or better than the most expensive muffs. I buy them by the dozens and give them to anyone I see working without ear protection.
