I am trimming the interior, doors, windows, base, of a house with pine. Three and half inch wide casings on six panel hemlock doors, five inch wide base, etc. So far I have three bedrooms and one bath finished. Tried installing trim unfinished on painted walls and then staining on wall, but stain bleed under the masking. Tried prestaining everything, but that is slow and you run out of room to rack drying trim. Has anyone tried installing trim over plastic sheeting to protect walls? Any other suggestions?

My personal feeling is it would be more trouble than it's worth. Did something similar when the homeowner didn't do all he said over a wkend. This wasn't a whole house tho. Taped up maskpaper and set the trim on top. After apologizing for not prestaining, he thanked me for thinking of him. Maybe just stain the wall edge and rack em on edge. I think I'd still prestain.
*I agree with Calvin. I tried it once and it was a big pain in the ass. Better to work at a comfortable level. For me, painting is like shaving, no matter what your hurry, you can't rush it!
*stain trim off the wall...near the stream,aj
