I need some help and I am not afraid to admit it.
The other day I was building a set of stairs for a client and I ran into a problem. Normally when I build a set of stairs I count the landing into the equation. But what if you wanted the first step on the stringer to start at the landing. This would bump out the landing a little, but would make attachment to the landing easier in case like the one I ran into.
If anyone can enlighten me on this solution please tell me.

I consider the landing a level in the design of stairs and only install a nosing instead of a full step or tread.
Just calculate two sets of stairs. One measured from the floor to the landing and the second from the landing to the top floor.
To do as you want, you would still do the same calculation, but add one riser and one tread to the equation. Then you add a mounting plate to the landing and set it down the thickness of your tread. This way it would rest on a solid shelf instead of just butting against your landing.
