I’m planning a staircase to the loft in my cabin. Wife wants it as open as possible, which to her means no middle stringer and no risers. Tread span stringer to stringer will be 36 inches. Q: How thick will this tread have to be, and what should I make it of?
Maximum weight will be my son-in-law at 250. General style is DIY rustic.
No building codes or inspections in this remote area.
I have thought of 1) glue-and-screw laminating two Doug-fir 2x12s 2)ordering custom milled treads from local sources. Local lumber would probably be red pine. So, how thick? 3×12, 4×12? 3)ordering some gluelam beams I can cut up into treads.
Suggestions and warnings appreciated.
