Sure ya can. Inside only. and it'll get all nice and worn in in NO time..it is VERY soft. If you want an old worn looking stair in few months, it'll do fine.
Oak and Yellow Pine are veryhard woods sold as treads just due to the fact that it / they are so durable and widely available.
No sense messing with a good thing unless you are matching something.
