   Mike,

   Post to post might be just a bit easier to install then over the post. What's "stronger" is really a function of how well the whole balustrade is done.

   What looks better is a matter of style, big or heavy newels won't look good with over the post railing in my opinion. Over the post tend to have a "lighter" feel to it.

   Post-to-post is so much more painful when sliding down.

   As a result, I've always preferred the over-the-post rails.

   Politics is the antithesis of problem solving.

   Granted, a hefty box newel at the bottom of the main staircase can look pretty cool (space permitting) but let me ask you this: What do you see on most of the railings that Stan builds?

   Over the post done properly is far more elegant.

   Strength is a function of instalation, but typically Over the Post done properly is stronger.

   Cost is a consideration also. Post caps aren't outrageous but can add a few hundred in labor and material.

   I like post to post with the right newel and rail profile. But that's probably just a personal thing.

   As others have said- installation is what imparts the strength, not necessarily the style.
