Hello,
I have a client that has asked me to install a walkup stairwell from their second story to the attic and directly over their existing stairs. This will force me to do the framing on the new stairs by working off the existing stairs from the 1st to the 2nd floor. Does anybody have any solutions to safetly work in an existing stairwell while being elevated off the treads high enough to frame. Oh, by the way the existing stairwell has hardwood treads?
The other problem with this new stairwell is that its access will be from an existing closet so, I need to install a door that slides up vertically. I was thinking about using sections of garage door tracks and a counter weight system but. I have not figured out the latching mechanism. This mechanism will have to be able to be operated from both sides.
Thanks for your input,
clark

Garage door handles work from both sides. If that's too ugly, whay about a double key deadbolt? They don't extend very far from the surface.
For the scallfold, you can try a gorilla ladder, or a cosco ladder that has individually adjustable legs. Or you could build a box that would fit over two or three steps to provide a level surface. There's another current discussion about this going on now.
I'm sorry, I thought you wanted it done the right way.
