Hi, I’m looking for some startup info for a small remodeling/design build company. I’ll start with some background about myself, where I want to go with this and finish with some questions.
I have construction experience in framing, roofing, siding and have completed several small projects including bathrooms, decks, roofing, siding etc. while working a fulltime job in another industry (I have been in machine design for nearly 20 yrs.). I also have just completed my own new home, during this project I served in the following capacities; architect, GC, framer, roofer, sider, painter, trim carpenter, ceramic tile installer, well you get the picture. With the help and support of my wife and her flair for home decorating we get constant and genuine compliments on our home.
We would like to take my/our experience and our real life brochure to the next level. Our goal is spec homes in the future but not at this point in time due to the considerable risk involved. We would like to start on a smaller scale, decks, rec. rooms, kitchen and bath remodels, additions etc. Through the construction of our new home I have developed relationships with some good subs and a few good suppliers.
Not being in the construction business I don’t have the project leads that many of you speak of. Any help on getting leads for a company that people are reluctant to hire because we are “new”. We are in the western New York area where it is hard to get people to spend the extra money for quality work.
Any help on bidding, markup and marketing etc. would be greatly appreciated!
