Hi all,
We are designing a custom pergola with cedar-wrapped steel tubes for the main members. The columns are 5″ tube with 3/8″ walls. The design has gone through a lot of changes (from wood framing to this steel) and we are going to use footings previously poured. The tops of the footings are about 1′ or so below grade and, although the steel is galvanized, I worry about the portion of steel the will be below grade.
Is there a good membrane product or other detail anyone can recommend for protecting the steel?

I have noticed that this thread is a duplicate of the other thread so I am shutting this one down.

Sorry- I couldn't find my post so I posted again...
That's not a good enough excuse. Your post is still vamoosed.

You know that one of the two needs to be active, right?
But the titles were different so I had to delete them both. For instance, "Steel below grade" was a copy of that other one so I deleted it.

maybe you missed the note to you from Robyn?
http://forums.taunton.com/tp-breaktime/messages?msg=123090.6
Where is that message to me from "Robyn"? And why, if her name is really Robin, then why doesn't she spell it correctly?
At least I note that that evil thread has been closed for posting. Hah! My powers are undefyable. Let that be a lesson to you ancient, slow-blow, useless, helpless, so-called "moderators". I have the true power.
~pm22 aka "-MODERATOR"
either you didn't click the link or you just to obtuse to see the axe falling. I dunno.
Drunk?
OK. I looked at that again and it was from "RDA" and not "Robyn" -- altho it was signed "Robyn". But, as far as I know, "RDA" refers to and means "Reccomended Daily Allowance". So there.
As for the use of the term, "Moderator", I guess anybody can use it. [At least until it becomes another banned word from this forum. So, be that as it may, I am still the ultimate moderator and, I cautiously point out, I was able to get on of those evil posts obliterated for all time and even forever.
I am still trying to figure out why my ban on the other nefarious post didn't also suffer that same fate. To each his own.

In case you haven’t noticed, we’ve been making some good progress on the forum, and your posting as “MODERATOR” and “closing threads down” both undermines that progress and confuses things. The real mods have enough work to do, thank you. Not to mention you’ve mucked up a perfectly legitimate thread! I hate when that happens.
<!----> <!---->
I asked you in pretty clear terms to stop and gave you the benefit of the doubt (I got the initial humor in it, but the joke’s run its course.)
<!----> <!---->
Once more, you’re not a mod and you don’t play one on BT. I’m thanking you in advance for knocking it off.

I don't know about that, but it reminds me of listening to the comedian Jerry Clower tell about seeing the big boats down at the marina, and he calls them yat-chets."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson

Robyn's on the up and up. She's the one with the real power. You should do what she tells you to do, if you want to stick around
Saying you're a moderator when you're not isn't cool.
If you have a problem with him starting 2 threads about the same thing, there are other ways to deal with it.
Well, if you "moderators" would get off the stick and do something about moral blasphemies such as this, I wouldn't have to step in and exert my immortal powers.<G>-pm22
Like I said, there are other ways to deal with someone running more than one thread on the same topic. We real mods don't actually have the power to close a thread, but we do have the connections to do so.
I think its understandable for someone new to think the thread has disappeared, since a lot of them drop off the screen pretty quick if its not answered.
And you could always contact any one of us if you see something inappropriate.
It is true that there's no good way to find the messages you've posted recently, unless you've set the option to mark them "high interest" and you know enough to ask to see the high interest messages. It takes newbies a week or two or twenty to figure this out. And the search facilities are pretty much useless if all you want to do is find your recent posts.

I thought that any thread you posted in automatically became 'high interest'"Put your creed in your deed." Emerson
"When asked if you can do something, tell'em "Why certainly I can", then get busy and find a way to do it." T. Roosevelt
Oh, we're here, don't worry. We may be quiet, but we're the real deal. This was not a Terms of Service infraction, just an honest mistake. You might want to stifle the MODERATOR stuff.Greg
Saying you're a moderator when you're not isn't cool.
I didn't catch that the first time. Big no-no."Put your creed in your deed." Emerson
"When asked if you can do something, tell'em "Why certainly I can", then get busy and find a way to do it." T. Roosevelt
This is B.S. You pretending to be a moderator and everyone else getting off topic on the original post. I looked up the other thread and it's the same deal.
To the O.P. Why don't you just pour the footings a foot taller so you don't have to deal with below grade beam? I'd say it's save you a lot of hassles down the line.
Gee, someone always has to come in and throw cold water on all the fun.

Do you realize that you've posted the same question twce? That could get confusing. You may want to do us all a favor and delete one of your posts! Sorry I don't have a good answer--I think any membrane, like a self-sticking bituthene would still allow enough moisture in to allow the steel to rust. Maybe dipping the ends in bitumen would do it? Not sure.
The best solution would be a sacrificial anode.
Does it have to be a virgin?

if galvenize, no problem but you can always incase in concrete. but this sounds like your engineer or architect question
Thanks for the answers everyone. I had thought of concrete as well but I think it would make it really difficult to get a level base with the paving stones set above the 4 corner footings and the rest of the pavers which are set on stone dust. I spoke with a GC who recommended torch-on rubber roofing around the steel. That seems to me to be a fairly good solution. Any comments appreciated
BTW, You can't see your posts if nothing new has been added since you last looked. The forum software here hides things you've already looked at in order to show you more threads. Everyone can see it just fine!To see your post again, all you have to do is click the forum name that you posted in. You can get free BT email coupons when you buy Chinese made electrical outlets at HD this week.
I had some of those from when I bought the Chinese drywall, but strangely their all got brittle and turned to dust before I could cash them in.
