I RECENTLY DISCOVERED A GREAT WAY TO WRAP STEEL COLUMNS WITH EXT. GRADE BALTIC BIRCH PLY.
THOUGHT YOU GUYS WOULD LIKE TO TRY.
I RABBET AND GLUE UP 3 SIDES FIRST, THEN I CHECK PLUMP ON THE STEEL POST AND SHIM WITH TAPE AND PLASTIC HORSESHOE SHIMS ON THREE SIDES. I PLACE AND CLAMP THE THREE SIDES ON WITH SPACERS TO REGULATE THE ASSEMBLY OF 4TH SIDE.THESE SPACERS ARE PUSHED TIGHT TO THE STEEL TO PREVENT MOVEMENT.
THEN I USE A FOAM GUN TO FILL THE VOIDS[I LIKE TO MAKE THE WRAP SO THERE IS 3/8″ GAP ON ALL SIDES] THIS ALLOWS THE FOAM TO GET ALL AROUND THE STEEL.
AFTER THE FOAM DRIES I CUT OFF EXCESS WITH A LITTLE JAPENESE PULL SAW, WORKS GREAT ON FOAM. REMOVE SPACERS. FOAM 4TH PIECE AND GLUE AND THEN CLAMP.
IT TAKES ALOT OF CLAMPS FOR THIS, I PREFER BESSY UNI KLAMPS.
THE FINAL PRODUCT PRODUCES A REAL COLUMN EFFECT OF STURDINESS WITH NO NAILS OR TAPPING STEEL FOR BACKING.

Thanks for the tips.
Do you have pictures? It would be interesting to see.
One tip back at ya though. Don't use all caps. The mods are mean in here and will toss you out on your ear. They're a finicky bunch....they don't let us chew, drink or swear either.

What'd you expect...his screen name is all caps too. My boss does the same thing in his e-mails. Anybody got a non-offensive e-mail ettiquette rule sheet?
If it's your boss, then just tell him: "no caps or I quit!"You'll find out if you are doing a good job or not. Bob's next test date: 12/10/07
Heh...heh...heh....since I'm providing the health insurance for the family now, don't think I'm going to try that.
What the hell's wrong with the Tigers? You go 1,2,3 in the ninth last night against the BACKUP shortstop.
Headline in todays sports page, "Royal's rally falls 15 runs short"
Nice to see the Tigers are back at .500, Royals are ten under .500 BUT 2 games better that last year. Yippee maybe won't lose 100 this year.
I wonder who decided that all cap was yelling, why not we just beat the hell out of him instead. make us feel good.
I agree. No more Mr Nice Guy...lets beat anyone that uses caps. Bob's next test date: 12/10/07
Whatever you do, dont call Bob a ######## ####!
LOL! Oops..I did the caps...if I dissappear, say goodbye to my friends for me.
Also, don't forget to hit the return a few times to make paragraphs even if it's not at the appropriate time LOL. Oops..did it again.
How about those pics? I'm trying to understand what type and size pole and the finish of your project? Painted? Smooth? Trim? We don't have poles here in TX but I covered bunches of them back in MI.

Hey Jim,
I know this is quick and dirty but what we do at work is just usea a ramset. Put a 2x6 on both sides. Then you can drywall, wrap with trim, etc.
I think your reply is aimed at Sawtime.
Your way is my way if I understand his question correctly. Two sticks of lumber is plenty enough. Usually, we are covering the steel for fireproofing issues. Bob's next test date: 12/10/07
Sounds nice and allows you to plumb and opens other detailing options.
Ever see these? "Wrap-A-Round" from http://www.deancolumn.com ? They were in JLC products section July 2008.
