Hi All,
I have 2 or 3 steel squares and a new aluminum Stanley. They are the real deal with octagon scale and refter tables. I saw a brand new old stock Stanley steel square today for $38. Seems expesnive and with most work being done with speed squares nowadays not a must have…but….
Is there anything more essential to good work than a perfect square?! I have no idea how long my aluminum will hold out and the typical “Empire Tools” squares are cheesy lacquar coated “L”‘s with no info.
I got to a job real early the other day and had nothing to read as I had coffee but busted out the steel square and tried to remember how to use it.
Real neat tools! I think I’m gonna get the $38 one just on principle, last of it’s breed!
Had to share!

I've got one like that, my dad passed down to me. I don't use it much but it feels good whe you can lay out stuff with a good square.
P.S. One book I like to pick up and read once a year or so is. Measure twice cut once. It's by Norm Abram, and that's what it's mostly about is hand tools, old verses new and the way carpentry and skills have changed from the time he got started to now. He also writes alot about his father and his old fashioned carpentry techniques verses todays techniques. Very good read.
