Step ladders without tool shelves

I have several rickety Type III aluminum stepladders and I wanted to give myself a treat and buy a real ladder. Our local HW store had a Werner FG 6′ Type I stepladder for $45 which I thought was an excellent price. Got it home, climbed up to replace a light bulb, ONLY THEN did I notice the lack of a shelf for tools, paint cans, wire nuts, etc. According the Werner catalog, there are two versions of the 6′ ladder, one with shelves, one without. Bigger ladders don’t come with shelves, evidently. Since then I’ve been looking at tradesmen on their ladders, and lo and behold, most don’t have shelves. So, do real men not use step ladders with shelves?

You win.
LOL!
I would think all six foot ladders would have shelves. Why not? On second thought, my ladder does not close well unless you first lift up the shelf and that is a bit of a pain. But generally speaking I would like my step ladder to have a shelf.
because they are dangerous..an accident waiting to happen..go head, balance a gallon of paint on there..set the drill there and move the ladder..
Look at ANY pro electrician, tool belt holds the tools and the ladder hops across the room like magic, never have to remove antything from the fold out finger grabber.
I worked with a sparky for quite some time, I brought My ladder..he proceded to cut off the tray..I know why now.

That was a good price.
I have that same ladder with the shelf and it's worth having even if you have to customize the cheap snap rings they use on the hinge pins.
be wary of ease
Werner sells, or did sell, a tool shelf add-on kit for their ladders. I put on one my 8 foot Werner for painting. I don't use the shelf much. If you see the kit, make sure that it fits the type I ladder model that you've got.

"DO IT RIGHT, DO IT ONCE"
that a pet peeve of mine, people who leave tools on the ladder
You know, the whole safety issue never occurred to me. I've never dropped a bucket of paint but I've certainly dropped drills, boxes of fasteners, etc. off of step ladder shelves. Speaking of fasteners: it's one thing to keep your tools on your belt, but where do you keep your fasteners, etc. if there is no shelf? You can put them on the top thing, but that just makes it worse.
