I want to build a stone arch over a gas cooktop. As i am wanting too use real stone I am concerned with the weight on the base cabinets. Any recommendations would be helpful?

I'm no expert on this by any stretch of the imagination, but perhaps you could beef up the wall where the legs of the arch land and bolt a steel angle to the wall under the arch to help support the weight. I guess if the floor can hold a fridge, it can hold the weight of an arch.
It's abit hard to tell from your brief description where you intend to locate the arch. Is it in front or in back? A lot will depend on how much stone your going to use and where the load will fall.
I can tell you though that I built a concrete counter 8 feet long and 28 inches deep that weighs almost 300 lbs and I did not have to beef up the cabinets at all. Floor joists underneath are 2x8 @ 12" O.C.
There has been no discernable deflection of either the cabinetry or the floor since the top was installed a year ago.
Hope this info helps. Without more specific info on your situation it's hard to give any real advice.
