I am building a two story conventially wood framed house with a
prefabricated fireplace in the family room. The fireplace is located on an
interior wall. The fireplace chimney which extends out the roof of the
house
is wood framed with stone veneer. The architect and his engineer have
indicated angle irons be placed on top of the second floor wall top plate
to
support the blockwork that will be carried to the roofline , which in turn
will be copper flashed and then the stone veneer will be installed.
My concern is that the angle irons are resting on wood which is two stories
high. As we all know, wood shrinks. I want to use tube steel or lolly
columns from the foundation all the way up to the angle irons, this will
provide solid steel support for the block and stone veneer on the chimney.
My question is: Am I being too cautious in wanting to use the steel? I know
it will cost money but I want it done right. I learned at a young age that
stone should not be supported by wood and I don’t feel comfortable changing
that now. Have things changed regarding this practice?
Thank you in advance for your advice.
