Any recommendations out there for a beginner mason putting up stone veneer (3/4″ thick)…without a brick shelf? What’s better– bond to a scratch coat or use an additive in the mortar to bond directly to the plywood.

Like Easysand lightweight drywall mud, it doesn't bond as well.

Sphere's got it right. If you bond that stuff directly to plywood, you will ruin the job, the wall/house, and your reputation, all in one fell swoop.
