Saw a job yesterday where they were mortaring fairly heavy ledge-type stone directly to drywall around a fireplace insert. There was some metal lath laying around the jobsite, but it wasn’t being used. Does this seem right?

If I get a chance, I'll take some pics, whole thing looks goofy, especially the chimney outside which is so wide that you could fit 4 flues in it. Apparently they didn't know how to taper brick courses, so they just kept the whole thing the same width from ground to the cap. Very, uh, rectangular.
Take some pics. the HO may need them when the bricks fall and kill some one.
