I understand the “capped tube” to offer an air cushion but is there a prefered location? The house is a single level and due to on going drain the pipes add new valves or remodel 2 bathrooms, laundry room, upgrade heating system etc. we now have banging pipes. Should the air cushion be install at the end of the longest run or near the meter?

Usually it is at the valve locations where water feeds go from full off to full on - ie: Washing machines, toilets, etc. Also, check your pipe supports. You may also have an unsupported run. Many times this is along a run between joists which should be supported every 5' or so.
Oh yeah. Rather than install a capped tube which will eventually fill with water, since air is water soluable, spring for an Air Camber Arrester, available at any good plumbing supply shop.$25.
