I have a deck coming out from a second story and want to use the
space underneath for picnics, park the car, etc. So the problem is simply how to stop rain and snow from leaking through the 2 X 6 deck boards
and capturing it somehow, and letting it drain away.

Someone's going to want to know (I'm betting). How big is the deck?
It sticks out from the house how far? Over the drive? Or over the lawn? Is it completely cantelivered? Or are there posts at the far corners?
Rich Beckman
*Also, how high is it ? ie, how much space is under the deck.
*
Joe-
Rip some p.t. stock from 0 to whatever to form a 1/4"
pitch. Nail these under the joists. Put the thin side to the house. If you do it right, you'll get two sticks from one. Now put corrugated roofing onto the pitched joists. Simple and cheap. Comes in colors
too.
Good luck, Cal

Cal's answer may help to solve the leak issue. Problem is, it will
rot out the structure of the deck.
But, maybe the drip issue is more important.

Mad Dog,
How is the deck going to rot? Air space from above deck spacing. Air space from below. Remember the low end of the pitch will have at least
3" of air at the outer edge of the deck. We're talking swiss cheese here.
*
Cal,
You mean the roofing will be suspended below the rim joist of the deck? I guess I didn't follow that. Anyway, what I meant was your system would serve to trap moisture and promote rot, given time of course. I'll have to reread your post, maybe it will make more sense, I don't see swiss cheese yet.

*Saw this at a recent home show.Joe - Should work for your application as I read ithttp://www.underdeck.comI haven't installed it or heard of anyone yet, but they took 20 hot questions and had answers for all of them. I pressed hard for longer panels and they seem willing to accomodate in sizeable orders, color was limited, but they are new etc......If you have questions about plastics, ask away, something of a previous life of mine. (Finders fee, commission ok, send check)

Mad Dog-
You got it. Sleepers under joists taper from 0 ish to
say 3 1/2 on a 12' run thus 3 1/2 air at outboard rim joist. A buddy of mine did it to a deck about ten years ago with "Unduline" sp.? brand translucent roofing and gasketed screws into the sleepers.
If you wanted to go to town on it, you could easily hang a gutter on the end of the sleepers with the roofing hanging long into the gutter.
The panels are cheap, available, time tested and light.
You could even screw the first deck board at the house for easy removal to get a hose in there for cleaning. We use this method on roof decks over EDPM
to keep the debris out.

I was thinking about jerry-rigging my own back deck like that this summer. Just for a place to move to the drunks out of the rain! I'm thinking about laying in strands of x-mas tree lights for a star in the sky kinda thing. Jeff
*I was thinking of screwing down 1" pressure treated plywood and applying a generous coat of GrailCoat. Build with enough slope to water to run off without being obvious when you walk on it.
*Thanks Cal. Got a better mental picture of it now. Does that look okay? It's a good idea. Sorry for the original mis-read on my part.Do

No pro. Do. I have a problem with making myself clear at times. To answer the q- uh I've seen better. But do the math. The guy just wants a simple inexpensive setup. It's cheap living space.
By the way, we're slow but we charge alot to make up for it. And as a
buddy of mine says- It ain't thick but it sure is short.

Cal,
Now you've got me thinking. I have a spot where I can store my boat and put a deck over it, solve two problems. This is a pretty cool idea.

I checked the Underdeck website, I like the mental image look of the solution Cal came up with versus the one that Underdeck has. For what that's worth.
*
Joe,
I just built a deck that is above a covered porch. The guy didn't want to be dripped on. I used synthetic T&G decking on a 1/4"/ft. pitch. This helped slow the amount of water passing through to a few drips. To capture the rest I ran vinyl (solid) soffit on the bottom of the joists away from the house. It was pitched the same. I ran the soffit ceiling 1-1/2" past the wrapped framing for the screens so that all the run off was outside the porch. Soffit is ribbed so that all the water is channeled away from the bottom of the treated joist, eliminating the fear of rot.
