Hi all. I’ve preparing my 1890s Victorian for a full painting. I need to removel the aluminum storm windows (about 20) prior to painting and I’m hoping for some advice. They are attached with exterior screws and caulk sealed. Should glass be removed? How should I safely handle them on a ladder. I certainly don’t want to drop them or fall. The upper glass is trapped by the screens. Should I remove the screen and lower the glass to be able to grab the top?
I’ll surely mark on each one where it came from to make replacement easy.
Thanks for any tricks!

I remove the entire storm unit.
since the screws that hold them in are often caulked and painted over and stripped out, I just drill the heads off with a steel drill bit. The srews they install with are AL so they drill easily.
Then take a flexable putty knife to slide behind and break the caulk seal.
Safest way would be to remove the panels from inside and just take out the frame from on the ladder, but I usually take the whole unit at one time. Caulk holds it in place so I separate at sides and bottom first ( bottom should not be caulked but it often is) and then at top

Thanks, Piffin. I decided to just take out the glass and screens. I little more work, but I'm not on high ladders that often and would rather play it safe!
