I spent 3 hours Saturday morning at Lowes doing a cabinet layout with their kitchen design person. At the end she told me she could not print it with the stove where we placed it because it was within one foot of a window and New York law does not allow such a placement. Is this so? If so, to what point do you measure on the window? The inside of the frame? The insid of the piece of wood that covers the casement mechanism? The edge of the glass?
Having spent some time on the forum looking for an answer to this quesiton, I may also have an issue with the vent for the hood. How close can it be to a window?

sounds fishy...i would contact your local building inspector and ask them what requirements are necessary.
Tell her that is not the location of awindow, but a big mirror/frame...
If it is a gas stove I think it is the same here in KY, ele is fine tho. The window can blow out a burner and then gas starts to build up is the idea.
Another explanation I've heard locally this is the potential for curtains and their risk of fire.
The designer mentioned the curtain issue, but the gas issue makes a little more sense to me. Moving the stove over a few inches is not a problem, so I guess I'll check with the local inspector to see if he rule applies and how they apply it.
I've been told that it needs to be 15" from the openning, but I can't cite chapter and verse. but just from personal experience and common sense, I would have to be crazy to put it less than that. I try for 18".
Curtains are flamables and they should be 18" blinds or louvered are another thing.

As an aside, MY stove is gas, right next to an adjoining wall with a window, never had a problem...no curtains, and rarely open, but I still am probly illegal as far as that goes. I also have an ext door on the other side same wall as the back of the stove, THAT will puff out a burner if it is windy and the burner is on LOW. Distance is 24" from stove to door knob.
