Straightening stair stringer question
I’ve got a staircase with three stringers (one each side, one in the middle) and the center stringer is pretty straight. The “left” stringer is up against a wall and is cupped into the room. i.e. tha “base” of the stringer (on the bottom) is straight, but the “top” of it (where the tread and riser meet) has cupped toward the center stringer. This doesn’t present a big problem, as the skirtboard fits inbetween the stringer and wall okay. The problem is on the right stringer which has cupped in the same direction, i.e. toward the room – away from the center stringer. Any suggestions or ideas for straightening the right stringer, that is getting the top of it to straighten up back over toward the center stringer? Preferably without replacing the stringer, which will be a big PITA because of the framing underneath it.
Thanks.

Why do you need to correct it? Is it so that you can get drywall in there? If the stringer is sawn lumber then you will probably just have to replace it, or you could sister one next to it after cutting or knocking off the parts that are in the way. If you try to straighten a sawn lumber stringer, the "points" will probably just break off.
hand or power plane/beltsander, or fir out wall below. If no wall below, then fir out the bottom of the stringer...
Is this solid lumber or other?
How long they been without temp treads to secure them in place?
Does heat or sun shine on only one side there?
All this make a diff - whether it is two days old or been curing there badly with no bracing for a year....

New construction or old work? Wall finish or no?http://www.tvwsolar.com
I went down to the lobby
To make a small call out.
A pretty dancing girl was there,
And she began to shout,
"Go on back to see the gypsy.
He can move you from the rear,
Drive you from your fear,
Bring you through the mirror.
He did it in Las Vegas,
And he can do it here."
I can't for the life of me figure out why you guys dress up stairs built by framers out of framing material. never seen one and hope I never do. You are building two sets of steps to make one.
We have cases built by stair shops and drop them in place. Temp stair dismantled or reused.
Geeze, sometimes you've just gotta be flexible?http://www.tvwsolar.com

what if you are the framer and the trim guy... and you are spending your own money... then....
for $400 in materials and my labor.... i can have a 15 rise oak staircase with custom metal rail..... makes a difference... one of those curses of being poor and able to...
:)p
I do get your point.........but...............you are still building two sets of steps.
So am I, the temps and the finish set. I re use or recycle the temps, others build over them; an inferior system in my head.
i only build one set of stringers... that will be finished... the only "waste" is a few 2x treads... and they always seem to get used....
i do understand have'n stairs built at a stairshop and drop'n em in place... fast easy... and a known cost... ... the known cost is a good thing... who knows what a built on site staircase costs ? several trades involved...start to finish... hard to know... I'd think a stairshop could build and deliver a staircase cheaper than a contractor could have his framing & trim guy build em in place...
