Friend has a home built 1850- – 1880.
floor joists have ledgers on the lower sides with “wood boards” laid in on top the ledgers. and an inch of plaster poured on top of the boards creating an “air space” under the floors. For insulation purposes we guess
was this a one off thing or was it commonly done?????

Hello,
I have never seen this done on floor joists, but I did own a house that had this done on the exterior walls. The house that I owned was built in 1915 and had an additional row of lath and plaster half way in-between the interior lath and plaster and the exterior sheathing. It did seem to make the house warmer than other un-insulated houses of the same era… I have never been in another house in Iowa that had this same insulation method…
