Subject: Question from FH Online
Hi,
We have a post and beam house that is wrapped in stress skin panels. It is
built into a hill with the north side roof coming almost to the ground. We have
and are still having lots of problems with moisture. The northside roof leaked
and we replaced it by taking off the old roofing, down to the foam, and
attaching 2×4’s to the roof beams, then laying plywood on top and re-shingling.
At that time we added a ridge vent and a vent between the old roofing and the
new roofing. I have seen signs of carpenter ants lately and I am really
worried. Venilation in our house is not very good either. Where do we get
help?

Hi Jean,
I would like to help. First though, more
information is needed:
Are your moisture problems mostly concerned with
the roof, or is that north side wall a problem
too? I assume that north wall is composed of some
type of masonry. How is your house sited? Are
there trees sheltering and dripping moisture on
your roof/siding? Are you getting a ground
moisture problem from siding too low, grade too
high, sill draining inward, etc.? What types of
roof vents did you install? Is there attic space
or a fan? What kind of moisture barrier does the
house employ? Any details on drainage and your
location as regards to rainfall, snowfall, and
humidity are helpful.
As to ants, a local pest control expert can do you
a lot of good.
Give us some details and we'll try to help.
