I have removed about 4’x8′ piece of stucco. What bonding agents
are recommended for bonding the old stucco to the new. I have
read that some bonding agents used on the exterior of a house will
break down if water comes in contact with them and crack. One person
recommended using portland cement between the new and old stucco.

After you prep the area to be restuccoed, add a product called DARAWELD C , to your new scratch, and brown coats,..... then you should be able to apply the color coat as regular.,...This product is a bonding agent for all types of concrete and stucco repair, specifically for repair... it comes in 1 gal size for convience.....looks like a thick Elmers glue....try this address for info...www.graceconstruction.com....Mark
What would you recommend for patching holes in stucco? I need to fill holes that were drilled to mount a sign on a cement stucco wall.
I think the best bonding agent for stucco is Weldcrete by Larsen's Products. Do a web search and you will find them. Actually the Portland cement idea is a good one and has been used for decades. Mix up a slurry of Portland and water to about the consiscency of thin pancake batter and paint it onto all the edges of the existing work. The secret to doing this is to get the stucco applied to all the edges before the slurry you paint on has a chance to dry.
Hardwall is right about the Portland cement slurry. Add a little bit of Anti-Hydro to it and it will really stick.
Just about any water based acrylic bonding agent designed for this purpose will be OK as long as the substrate is sound, although I have had no good luck with Quickcrete products, come to think of it. I've been using ElRey 100 with great results.

What is Anti Hydro? What does it do? I have not heard of it unless it is by another name.
