Hello to all,
In another post that I had earlier about grab bars in a bathroom, I should have asked about stud finders. The one that I had will not work even with a new battery and the new one works only 50% of the time. Both are Zircon
What make and model are realiable for finding studs though drywall, plaster, and maybe even tile.
Thanks in advance Turtle boy

Turtle, its the luck of the draw. I nail alot of tall baseboard and use a Zircon studfinder. I've tried many different studfinders and have come back to Zircon. The ones that do the least, no deep scan, no metal or electrical scan. The basic ones seem to last the longest. The one I have now, a black one, I've had for 2 years, its a new record for me. 3 to 6 months was the previous norm. Maybe I got lucky.
Still it won't read thru tile.

i use the top of the line zircon everyday, but results through plaster with wood lath are poor, ceramic tile? forget it
is the other side of the wall accessible for stud finder? scan it and relate the measurements to the other side
other than that, just plain old ingenuity and maybe a small finishing nail in a drill through a grout line, grout is easily repaired
caulking is not a piece of trim
The best success for me has been to use a rare earth magnet to find the drywall screws, then you know where the stud is. The magnet will stay there too, so you can leave it stuck to the wall without marking it if your in a situation where you don't want to leave marks if possible.
