Want to put tile down in my dining room. Right now it has two layers of plywood totaling 1″ thick on joist spaced @ 16″. Should I add a layer of cement board before tiling and if so will the 1/4″ board be sufficient? Also anybody have tips on removing the old glue from the floor short of sanding it?
Thanks in advance
Rob

Robert,
Old glue from ??? Vinyl sheet goods? Ooooh, that's a bear. I've removed it from concrete, but never plywood.
Anyway, the 1/4" cement board will do OK - I'd prefer 1/2" if I could fit it in w/ other transitions (i.e.; doors / openings to other rooms). It'll cover the glue (smooth out the glue residue as needed). You want some type of cementitious surface behind the tile for your thin-set - in my experience, it holds longer that way.

*1/2" board put down in thinset is preferable. If your joist span is over 12' make sure that it has center bridging, assuming that you have access to the space below. If a lot over 12' you should check for deflection.Jeff
