On a current remodeling project, I want to add a bay or bow window that one can sit in. What kind of support to either the foundation or the existing wall should I provide?

How big is you Moter-in-law? That determines the load requirements..................(-:
Seriously, Steve - We need a bit more info to even begin to understand what you want to do. How far out is the bay going to cantilever? Are you framing out at the floor level, or trying to have it project out from the wall?
*1) cantilever the floor joists to support the window2)support the window on posts set into the ground (a skirt will make it more attractive)3) support the winodw on brackets (ditto on the skirt).
*Some bays are even engineered to be supported from above by cables and turnbuckles from the top of the wall. All gets covered up by the little hip roof.Chuck
*Andersen sells the cable kits. I think their specs say no window seats in cabled bays though.
*Nothing is that easy Steve.Wish it was.Need more info.Ed. Williams
*The cable kits are great but they are very limited....you have to jack the structure to it's final position... including any out of square adjustments...after you have it square, level.. and the windows in the bay operating correctly then you take up all of the tension on the cables...but .. as ryan said... i wouldn't count on them as addtional structural support..Mike
