Swapped out the handles and hinges on a refrigerator door so the open right is now open to the left.
Of course it is manufactured to be able to swap sides using manufactured machined tolerances with the screws holes already placed.
Problem is the gasket wants to catch on the new hinge side now upon closing and slightly creasing itself over the center part of the door.
The top and bottom 6inches or so engage properly and seal as design but the center portion catches and therefore will not expand properly to it’s designed position being flush against the metal of the fridge.
I suppose I could try some lube on the gasket thinking it might slide into position seeing the close tolerance but after viewing the gasket contact point it doesn’t seem that would be enough.
Loosening the screws that hold the hinges to shim them out a tad didn’t change things and I’m thinking the next approach is along the lines of an adhesive inside the gasket itself
to try and lessen the thickness of the gasket to supply the needed room for the door to swing shut without pinching the gasket.
Anyone ever been there and able to offer a hint?
Thanks.

Try Vaseline on the gasket. No joke.

Ya, heard that. Will today and check in later.
be check, check, and recheck.
'oh, waiter....check please'
I'd suggest Mineral Oil as an alternate to vaseline. Bob's next test date: 12/10/07

Silicone spray.

The gasket had settled itself over the night left alone to it's own devices and the door can now shut without any movement of the gasket
but I had a stick of lube I carry and applied that to the perimeter anyhow just as a matter of principle.
Thanks all.

get it aligned right - maybe with help of some silicone or Armoral spray, then leave it for a couple of days or warm it with a hair dryer on low to retrain it. If it is not too old, it will relearn the new set.
