Mark, could there be a second switch that controlled the outlet too? A "Three Way" circuit? Other potential is for the original outlet to be "split" so that one plug would be switched, the other constant "hot". Either would utilize the additional red wire.
Several inexpensive books are available on home wiring. Taunton Press publishes one. I'd recommend obtaining a book with easy to decypher schematics, and proceed from there.
*Mark,At this distance I can't see how your circuit is wired, but, when our plans call for a switched outlet we normally run 3-wire to the outlet so that one half of the duplex is hot while the other half is switched. Does your 3-wire go to the outlet? In your case it looks like your switch is out of the loop.Just what have you messed with? Did you replace the outlet? The switch? Both?At the outlet, the ground is attached to its dedicated lug. The neutral (white) is attached to its lug, either of the two screws on the same side of the outlet as the ground. On the other side of the outlet the metal tab connecting the two screws is cut and the black wire is attached to the lower (usually) screw and the red to the upper. At the switch box, both white wires are twisted and nutted together, both ground wires are nutted together with a pigtail to the ground screw on the switch (if you use grounded switches) and to the box if it's a metal box. The incoming (hot) black wire is nutted together with the black wire in the 3-wire romex with a black pigtail to one screw on the switch. The red wire is attached to the remaining screw on the switch. If you don't have the above setup, be safe and call your electrician.
