t &g mahogany / with pine arch overlay
hello to all hope your summer is goin well… i’ve got this restoration i’m knee deep into. it’s actually an entrance to a milking barn, on a large farm estate. and the tongue groove, has been repaired numerous times. and there is a dual arch w/ a column overlay. with arch double hung window. and an arched door . both respectfully in the middle of the “faux” arches.– there an attachment–. my little voice is telling me that mixing the two woods , isnt the best idea. but i’ll be painting all six sides of the t&g and the arches and column. there is diagonal t&g 4/4x 6 behind the whole thing. now the reason why i’m deciding on mahogany is there’s alot of water and no sun ( northern exposure). and the maturity of the pine we get today will not hold up to the moisture. how do i kow that is because there is the same thing on the northern exposue and between the moisture and the southern exposure the t&g which was painted on all six sides before applied to the wall— 2nd attachment– sorry for the quality. i had a thought to strap 1×2 to the sheathing, but the existing roof line and more importantly soldier course brick on the foundation/water table on the bottom would not allow for this.
so back to the 4/4 mahogany t&g , what do you think i can expect with the interaction of those two woods…. thanks slainte’ to all stay safe………b

Bear,
I think it will be fine as long as you keep the grain direction going the same way on both pieces.
I mix mahogany with pine and poplar when making drawers and cases and have not had a problem.
Grain orientation is more important ,many times, more than difference in wood species. Unless you are mixing plywood and solid wood, or green timber and kiln dried.
