I’m currently installing a tile counter top for a good friend. The cabinets are cherry and the cabinet girl insisted on us putting in a
cherry bullnosing,1×1.5″ on bottom, 1×2.5″ on top. I’ve got the bullnose attached and the durarock on so we are tiling Monday morning. My question is …what would be best, tile and then grout to the edge of the cherry or tile, then apply a bead of caulking between the tile and the cherry and then apply the grout. My thought was since there are two different materials, the caulking would allow for expansion and contraction. Any thoughts greatly appreciated! Thanks cc

I did this and stained and sealed the cherry first with three coats. With it sealed against moisture and glued tight to the substrate, there is no movement to speak of and no complaints.
sorry no close up
*piffin, great job. i wont let wifey see it cuz i dont wanna hear about it when i get finished with mine :)crosscutt,it depends on how big a joint your talking if its about a 1/8 joint then you'll be all right. if its a larger then you might want to use some colored caulking for a expansion joint. hope this helps
*I used quarter sawn clear doug fir for nosing in my kitchen. Primed and painted all sides with a tightjoint(1/16" max). Grouted and after 2 years zero cracking. I was very particular about letting the wood aclimate before installation. I installed the wood after all the tilework was completed. I used a short piece of nosing to guage the joint during tilesetting. (A chalkline wasn't good enough.)If you are worried about cracking go tightjoint and caulk.
*Thanks for all the imput. piffen, I guess youv'e been there and done that, nice job. Is that a dental molding on the cabinet cornice? Yes I will be going tight joint and was worried that a hairline crack might occur. The nosing is attached to the substrate well so I could always caulk afterward if a crack does develop. Any preferances for thinset mortars? Thanks again. cc
