i installed a bosch 2400e tankless in my ex’s home a little over a week ago. it is in the attic, next to a bedroom in a 1 1/2 story house. the vent goes straight up through the roof with 4 feet of vent topped by a rain cap. all z vent, and way too expensive. it ran fine until last night, then it died during a severe rainstorm.
although the installation followed instructions, apparently water that blows into the vent falls directly into the ignitor and destroys it. bosch is sending a new something (maybe entire heater, maybe ignitor only), and they say they will only replace it once for that cause.
and i’m going to change the vent assembly to have a 90, then horizontal run, then a 90 with a condensation trap. i’m sure water will blow in the cap again, but maybe this time it will be trapped somewhere other than in electronics.

Use a Takagi or Rinnai. You can install those outdoors on the wall, so they should be fine with a little water.
