Does anybody know much about tankless water heaters? I have been asked about them as part of remodel I’m doing and I’m not familiar with them. I have checked a few websites and if they do what they say then they will be a good investment. I like the fact that they take up so little space. Can anyone reccomend a particular brand/model for a family of 3 (preferably gas if there is such a thing), thanks

If you buy the right model, such that you have sufficient gpm of hot water available, then they do perform as advertised. Gas is better than electric, and hard water is a problem.
Do it right, or do it twice.
timc, I had one and took it out because it was so frustrating to use -- look at thread 36505 for some comments "from the other side of the story"
We have a Bosch/Aquastar installed in a one bath vacation cabin. It uses LP and runs the shower just fine. If the kitchen sink is running full blast at the same time (as the shower) there's is a slight decrease in pressure. However, no change in temp. It is a slick little box that uses little gas. I would investigate a larger GPM model if used full time with a bigger place.
For our application it is great.

I don't now about the gas ones, but electric ones require relatively huge amounts of amperage to operate--in the 60-80 amp range; I believe some require 100 amps. I had one client ask about one last year; when I furnished her with the cost of the electrical re-mod necessary to install it, she ashcanned it and went with a second 40-gal tank heater dedicated to the problem bathroom. Saved about $4000 by doing so.

We installed an Aquastar 125 NP about 7 years ago in our house (family of 3) and would not change. Yes it took some time for my wife and daughter to get used to it (about a month), but they agree it is great. The washer is the only appliance we can not run at shower time; the bath and shower can run at the same time, but the tub fills very slowly.
There are many advantages to there use, one being that they handle hard water better than tank heaters. But they may not be as efficient as some may say. You need to evaluate your needs and usage patterns to determine the overall savings and benefits realised with your family.
