Is the drywall supposed to butt tight at all sides. How much gap is allowable? How much gap is way too much?
At the intersection of vertical to horizontal tape, is the vertical tape end supposed to line up w/the edge of the horizontal tape, or overlap it to the middle?
Do I need to cut a V notch at the butt ends of tight fitting panels, or is that hoo haw?

Drywall is not finish carpentry, try and make your seams as tight as possible. Any gaps fill with durabond before taping and compound. Overlap your tape seams compound will cover laps. I like to tape all joints with durabond as opposed to compound. No V notch at butts 12-14" mudd seam.
P.S. dont mentally masturbate the speading of compound your gonna have some lines thats why you sand.
I learned a long time ago from a taper not to but drywall. He kept a church key with him and would always be opening joints for his mud. About an 1/8 to 1/4" worse is fine.
I'll overlap tape no biggy. Don't stress with the mud you'll get better with practice.
Worse scenario don't sand and tell your friends you meant it to look that way, what do they know.
Drywall should never be tight against each other to allow for wood shrinkage..it's in the Gypsum Construction Manual. Any gap can be fixed, but when sheets meet, 1/8" is proper.
Overlay tape by as much as you want.
