Is it possible to use drywall tape on painted drywall? I want to bisect an existing wall. I would have an inside corner that I need to deal with. Any suggestions?

Why not use an inside corner bead? The combination tape/plastic ones tend to disappear, yet provide strength to the seam.
Any answer about the paint would desire some knowledge of the type and condition. I would imagine that if it's sound, that sanding it and applying either a strong primer or bonding agent would resolve doubts about mud adhering to the two surfaces.
*IMO, Cut/scribe new bisecting wall's rock within 3/16" of existing wall. Avoid butting tapered or damaged sheetrock edges into old wall. Finish sheetrock on new wall as if old wall wasn't even there. Sand new wall. Caulk seam between new and old wall with high quality latex or acrylic based caulking. After that caulk has dryed for a few days caulk it again with a quick wipe of a damp sponge to feather the caulk in. Paint the walls, you are done.Don't use green high moisture content studs for your new wall.joe d
*If you do tape to the painted wall, about all I have experienced are air bubbles which will pop and leave a bunch of tiny holes which you can fill with succeeding coats. Might consider using reg. mud as there seems to be more adhesive in that mix. Best of luck.

Thanks to all.
*Sand the old wall...rough up the paint before you apply drywall compound. If the old wall has flat, latex paint you will encounter few problems with adhesion.Glossy latex or oil paint will present a challenge.Rough it up, man! Use USG taping compound (green bucket)for the taping part, rather than "Lite" All-purpose compound. Watch for air bubbles.Mel
